The Summer Show In the New Space
5th June – 27th June 2010
The best of Contemporary Studio Ceramics for the start of the summer featuring new works by John Pollex, Susan Nemeth, Clare Crouchman and Andrew Palin
Summer at Bevere has always been marked with the emphasis on colour and diversity – this year is no exception.
John Pollex has exhibited at The Gallery since 2006. He has carved out a unique niche in the world of studio pottery. Referring to the work of painters such as Sir Howard Hodgkin, Robert Natkin, Patrick Heron and Ben Nicholson, John uses his knowledge and understanding of the application of slips (liquid clay) to produce a completely different style of working. He dispenses with slip trailers in favour of paintbrushes and sponges and more recently plastic spatulas, intensely coloured earthenware slips are applied in a free and painterly abstract manner.
Clare Crouchman uses several different types of stoneware clays and porcelain to create her ceramic wall pieces. Prepared clay bodies are inlayed into one another, with lines and marks etched directly into the surface. Oxides and glazes are applied sparingly to preserve the stone-like quality of the clay.
Susan Nemeth makes porcelain ceramics, which are inspired by historical textiles and wallpapers. Laminated sheets of coloured clays are inlaid with hand cut patterns, beaten, rolled and stretched over moulds. Forcing a form from one single flat sheet of clay ensures a simple shape. Buried in sand to prevent warping, the pieces are fired to their limit, to achieve a smooth, matt, vitrified surface.
Andrew Palin makes textural glazed stoneware vessels, which are fired in oxidizing electric kilns. The work is both thrown and hand built, with surface modification frequently taking place on the clay surface prior to reactive slip and glaze application. The glazes are designed for texture and both volcanic and controlled crawling glazes are used with a combination of colouring oxides.
Printmakers Andy Lovell, Karen Keogh and Susie Perring display a mix of colourful landscapes, seascapes, birds and flowers to support this vibrant show of ceramics.
