South Wales Potters Association Group ShowSaturday 2nd May - Sunday 31st May 2009South Wales Potters Association is one of the largest in the UK, with over 100 members including full-time potters, sculptors and students. 'Fired up' in 1964, it was the first regional pottery organisation. Those 15 members exhibiting work in this show have been selected to represent the diverse talent from within the organisation. Pauline Patterson from SWP says "One of the aims of South Wales Potters is to demonstrate to the public the versatility of clay, as evidenced by this engaging exhibition." Kim Taylor, Gallery owner, says, "One of the featured artists this month is Neil Bally, who has lived in Wales since 1996, his work is held in public exhibtions in South Africa and the UK and he regularly shows in London but not in the Midlands, which is why we are delighted to have Neil as part of this exhibition. Neil Bally's paintings reveal themselves gradually and the viewer is compelled to slow down, to pause, to stop. We can't quite decide how to get a hold on what we are seeing. It is clear we are not being told how to read these paintings, there is room for our own interpretations. So we are left to complete the picture." The second featured artist is Doug Eaton who was born in, and returned to, Coleford in the Forest of Dean. Doug says of his work "I should be entirely abstract, but instead I lean towards landscape type themes to hang paint on. Although I've done my fair share of traditional looking paintings, I am currently trying to be more fundamental in my approach to try and produce a strong result from lines, shapes and colours which combined in some way evoke a landscape, usually based on the Forest of Dean, which I find to be quite a particular landscape. I tend to be interested in extremes, soft against hard edge, dark against light, hot against cold etc. and try to marry them together. I try to use a minimum of information for the onlooker to suggest the subject - hopefully, then the seemingly random paint begins to make sense, or alternatively, but with equal importance, the seemingly 'random' paint will remain as paint and be enjoyed for itself."
