The Graduate ShowWork by 17 of the best graduates from 2007 in ceramics and glass12th January - 24th February 2008As well as showing the established names in ceramics and other crafts, we believe that we have a role in promoting the work of those talented artists/makers that emerge each year from colleges and universities. 2007 was a vintage year and the graduates in this exhibition are those that we felt have adistinctive voice and the talent to make their careers in studio glass and ceramics To complement and contrast the work of the graduates we shall also be showing New BeginningsA selection of modern and abstract artwork by established and professional artistsJohn O'Brien spent a decade soldiering around the world, before retiring from the Army and embarking upon a new career as a social entrepreneur, innovator & artist. His subject matter varies although he concentrates mainly on landscapes or scenes derived from local travels. His bold strokes and use of colour aim to capture a variety of conditions from the drama of impending storms over Scottish mountains to the crystalline light of a perfect Shropshire summer day. Carole Baker is inspired by the landscape, bold, vibrant colour and texture fascinate her and she strives to create exciting and evocative paintings. She paints in acrylics, watercolour and mixed media. Always looking for new ways to work, Carole believes this is a great cure for boredom and allows her to be more expressive. Brian Steventon explains "I am inspired by the abstract element within the subject, very often atmospheric and light conditions enhance the abstract quality that I am seeking. Sometimes it is the bigger landscape that I find inspirational, other times it can be merely a cameo of the overall view, but there is rarely a day goes by when I don't see something that inspires me to paint." Susan Macarthur has a life drawing and painting background and likes the drama of using the human form. She studied for a BA in General Art in California where she was first introduced to textiles and stitch. She now uses a combination of fabric, paper, acrylic paint, charcoal, fabric dyes and stitch. Susan says, "I like the unpredictable occurrences that can arise with these materials, although I feel my work is more 'painterly' than textile." Kim Taylor gallery owner says, "We are looking forward to this our first exhibition of the New Year as we feel there is so much to enjoy over the two months with the combination of the established and the emerging talents."
