Peninsula ExhibitionAn exhibition of Ceramics and PaintingsNew works by Cornish ceramicists John Bedding, John Pollex and Tim Gee and paintings by Cornish born Michael Praed and Cornophil Valerie Briggs. John BeddingIn my most recent work I have been using a photographic technique to project images and patterns generated by computer onto the unfired or biscuit pot. It is a major part of my work to examine and explore the chemistry of nature, and reconstruct objects to my own design. John PollexFor Pollex music plays an important part in the activity of painting a pot; it helps him to create an atmosphere that reflects his mood and feelings at the time. His preference generally falls into two categories, which he likes to think of, as inner and outer. The inner being more contemplative, which might include Gregorian chants, Indian music and the timelessness of the Shakuhachi from Japan. The outer would cover anything from modern jazz to opera. Tim GeePorcelain, my first love, remains a daily challenge, stretching me both mentally and physically, yet repaying this effort with works of sublime delicacy and beauty. I continue to expand my visual vocabulary, adding new forms, surfaces and colours on a regular basis. Michael PraedPraed has emerged as one of the most prolific and successful of the contemporary Cornish artists. His style is intriguing and sometimes a disturbing combination of realism and abstraction. He portrays the beauty of Cornish harbours and seascapes in his own distinctive style. Deserted breakwaters curve pincer-like into an empty sea. Bright boat hulls stand stark against the gentle wash of sea. His work is always beautifully composed, illustrating the observational and technical skills of the artist to marvellous effect. Valerie BriggsWorcestershire artist Valerie Briggs has had a long love affair with Cornwall and has created new work for this exhibition based on the flora and fauna of this dramatic county. Valerie will be exhibiting watercolour paintings, pastels and her well-known pencil studies in a collection she has called Cornish Gems. Gallery owner Kim Taylor says "John Pollex was one of the three featured makers in our inaugural ceramics exhibition in May 2006. It is with great pleasure that we welcome John back to The Gallery at Bevere along with fellow Cornwall makers Tim Gee and John Bedding. With paintings by Michael Praed and Valerie Briggs it promises to be an exciting month of contrasts in style, colour and technique."
