"Porcelain - A Capricious Beauty" by
Chris Keenan,
Jack Doherty and
Joanna Howells
Named after its resemblance to the Venus' shell ('porcella' in old Italian) porcelain
is highly prized as a medium for table and decorative wares because of its toughness, low
permeability fineness and translucent quality. This exhibition at The Gallery at Bevere,
Worcester brings together three remarkable masters of the challenging art of turning clay,
water and fire into porcelain objects -
Chris Keenan,
Jack Doherty and
Joanna Howells.
A new collection by
Chris Howells - FRUIT - Striking oil paintings treating a still life subject in a traditional
style with an intricate modern twist.
All
Chris Keenan's
work is thrown Limoges porcelain, glazed using combinations of tenmoku and a deep celadon, and
then reduction-fired in a gas kiln to 1280°C. Chris is a member of the Craft Potters Association
and of Contemporary Applied Arts.
Jack Doherty's
forms are either thrown or slab-built with surfaces which are pierced, stretched, carved and
ribbed. He uses combinations of coloured clays which react differently in the kiln, giving subtle
changes of colour and texture. His pots are functional but they are also decorative and can be
hung on walls; taken down and used.
Joanna Howells
chooses to work in porcelain for its tactile and visual qualities, the way it allows itself to be
thrown then deformed and textured while still plastic.
